Clarence ‘Sonny’ Weems is a youth philanthropist and award-winning professional sports figure. He is currently a professional basketball player in the Chinese Basketball Association.
Sonny believes in:
Investing in the under-served needs of the youth.
Inspiring academic excellence and community service in others.
Motivating the next generation of leaders through sports.
Sonny has used his global platform as an accomplished professional athlete to help thousands of students and their families over the past ten years. As a 2008 NBA Draft Pick and Euro-League All-Star, Sonny has spent the last decade serving the Mid-South youth through summer camps, giveaways, and donations to other non-profit organizations with similar philosophies. His commitment to charity is so strong that he has hosted an annual week of giving, coined “Weems Week," for the last seven years.
Understanding that early literacy is a significant pillar of learning, Sonny has worked closely with the West Memphis School District through his Weems Week initiative to supply backpacks full of school supplies to Kindergarten through third-grade students. As a former Arkansas Razorback, he has always made his home community and home state a priority in his philanthropic efforts.
For his extensive community service and generosity, Sonny has been recognized by both the City of West Memphis with a city park that now bears his name and the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, his alma mater, which has named a film study room for student-athletes "The Sonny Weems Film Room.”
